Chapter 1:
“Shouldn’t she go out to explore the camp?” Stormheart meowed. He looked at Flamekit who were dozing on Blueflower’s belly. “It’s already sunhigh!”
“Flamekit still hadn’t opened her eyes,” Blueflower reminded him. She looked affectionately at Flamekit who was sleeping on her belly. Flamekit rolled over and lay her paw on her muzzle, and Blueflower purred.
Flamekit felt her mother’s warm pelt and snuggled closer, a silent purr vibrating in her throat. As she snuggled against Blueflower, she heard noises outside the nursery, and pricked her ears.
“Cherrykit, catch it!” she heard someone meow.
“Cherrykit is such a slow slug!” someone teased.
Flamekit wandered towards the noises and she felt a paw on her tail. “Where are you going?” She turned towards her mother voice and mewled curiously, “Why are there noises?” Blueflower meowed back, “They’re your littermates playing moss ball.”
Flamekit mewed, “Can I go and play too?” Blueflower replied, “After you open your eyes.”
Flamekit mewled in protest as her mother picked her up by her scruff and carried her back to their nest.
She snuggled into Blueflower’s soft pelt and listened to her soft snores.
She felt overwhelmingly curious about what moss ball was, it must be fun!
At that thought, she stretched open her eyes, and the sight caught her by surprise. The nursery was enormous! In the dark, the nursery felt warm and snuggly and a bit squashed, but the nursery didn’t look like that. A cool draft of air drifted from an opening in the nursery, and Flamekit moved curiously towards it.
Flamekit peeked out of the nursery, and stared in astonishment at the camp. It was huge! Cats were hurrying around and some were carrying fresh-kill. She felt small in comparison and huddled at the opening of the nursery.
“Flamekit!” someone mewed excitedly and three other kits tumbled into the nursery. It was Squirrelkit, Cherrykit and Wolfkit, her littermates. Flamekit purred as they tumbled into a heap in front of the nursery, tails tangled and fur matted.
Blueflower meowed, “Look at you! What have you been doing?” She pushed Cherrykit towards her and began washing her vigorously. Cherrykit squirmed under their mother’s rough tongue and mewled.
After her littermates vigorous washing, Blueflower gave a satisfied purr and meowed, “Off you go, little ones, you can show Flamekit the camp.”
“The camp!” the thought trilled Flamekit, “how big could it be?” She padded after her littermates, excitement growing with every pawstep she took. Her littermates eagerly showed her the camp.
“This is the apprentices den; we’ll be sleeping there when we are six moons old, which are moons away!” Wolfkit mewed disappointedly, lashing his tail in frustration.
“Don’t worry Wolfkit, six moons will fly by quickly!” Squirrelkit purred cheerily.
“We’ll show you the elders den!” Cherrykit mewed excitedly. She led the way towards a fallen log which was the elders den.
Cherrykit poked her head into the den, and mewed happily, “We’re here!” and disappeared into the entrance. Wolfkit and Squirrelkit followed and Flamekit scurried into the elders den, eager to find out who were the elders.
When she entered, Flamekit saw cats with white patches around their muzzles. Squirrelkit mewed to one of the cats, “This is Flamekit!” One of the cats meowed back, “I’m Shimmerpelt, nice to finally meet you.” Squirrelkit, Cherrykit and Wolfkit purred when Flamekit got a soggy lick on her chin.
“I’m Hawkgaze,” a brown tom rasped, his startling pale blue eyes gazing at her. That’s must be why he’s called Hawkgaze, Flamekit thought shivering.
“Amberstorm,” Another tom meowed, his eyes twinkling with humor. “Don’t worry about Hawkgaze, he’s stares at everybody like that, so he frightened lots of kits before. Well, especially your littermates.” There was a muffled squeak and Flamekit saw Squirrelkit using her tail to cover Wolfkit’s mouth. Wolfkit was staring at Amberstorm furiously, his tail twitching.
“Why don’t we go outside and play?” Cherrykit mewed cheerfully, casting a sideways glance at Wolfkit.
“Ok!” Flamekit mewed back. She trotted out of the elders den.
